The researchers found that although these men did not regularly practice safe sex, even with casual partners, they were interested in reducing their HIV risk by using the rapid test. 87 percent of the men stated that if the test were available they would use it for themselves at home, and 80 percent would also want to use a home test with prospective partners. As for how the results would affect their behavior, the answers varied. Some men said that a positive test would kill the mood immediately, where others explained that they might still proceed - just with more caution.
One of the concerns about using such rapid tests is that there is a long window period during the acute infection period in which these tests are not accurate -- due to the time it takes for infected individuals to develop antibodies. There is a risk that a false negative test could encourage men to practice unprotected sex, because they erroneously believe they are not at risk. However, that concern was neatly sidestepped by the choice of a study population where the men were already having a large amount of high-risk, unprotected sex. For such individuals, any information that might encourage a few more precautions seems to be unquestionably a good thing.
