Female Condoms in the District

There are a lot of men who really like the female condom as a method of birth control and STD prevention. However, female condoms are significantly more expensive than male condoms - which often prices people out of the market for regular use. That's why I was so interested to read this update about the cost effectiveness of a free female condom distribution program in Washington, D.C., which targeted individuals in high-risk communities.

The program distributed over 200,000 female condoms of which 130,000 were used during acts of heterosexual intercourse. It cost $414,186 - including the cost of providing educational programming to participants. Although that sounds like a lot of money, the program would have needed to prevent only one or two HIV infections to recoup its own costs. Given the prevalence of HIV in the population they were serving, the scientists estimated they prevented 23. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me!
