January was a busy month for scientists studying HPV, as you'll read about later this week on my blog. I, however, was more than slightly distracted by watching the Republican primary race unfold. Not only has there been the usual ignorant rhetoric about oral contraception, we've had the dubious pleasure of watching a presidential candidate say that it's better to lie to, and cheat, on your spouse than to practice ethical non-monogamy - which at least gives said spouse the option of making informed choices about her sexual risk. Thus, it was not a stellar month for STDs in the world at large, even if the research world did throw out some fascinating studies.
What I Wrote About In January:
- Book Review: Mating in Captivity
A fascinating book about how, for some people, intimacy can destroy desire. It's definitely worth reading if you've ever had a relationship that suffered from the "familiarity breeds lack of interest" problem.
- Why Do I Have To Wait To Have Sex After Trichomoniasis Treatment?
This question came in from a reader, and it's a good one. The basic answer is that if you start having sex before STD treatments have had time to take effect, you can still transmit the STD. .
- HIV & Premature Aging
Premature aging is one of the stranger side effects of HIV infection and treatment. Why does it occur? Researchers have several opinions.
