A BUKOBA based NGO, known as "Wakulima wa Baadaye", has launched a sensitization programme on HIV/AIDS and Safe Motherhood, involving a total of 61 Primary Schools in Karagwe, Misenyi and Bukoba districts.
The Programme Coordinator, Steven Celestin, said the NGO will enable the students to become good ambassadors and educate surrounding communities on how to avoid contracting HIV/AIDS.
"The Programme was on pilot basis covering a total of 28 Primary Schools in Misenyi district, nine primary schools in Karagwe district and 24 primary schools in Bugabo Division, Bukoba Rural district.
"We hope that students from the 61 primary schools who are under the project will be good ambassadors and educate surrounding communities on how the disease spreads and how one could avoid contracting HIV/AIDS, " he said. According to Mr Celestin, other topics covered by the project include Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs), Improved Nutrition (IN) and Environmental Conservation.
Meanwhile, a total of 70 People Living With Disabilities (PLWD) were attending Vocational Colleges with support from Muleba District Council. Muleba District Community Development Officer, Magreth Kalokola, said the assistance include paying school fees for them.
Out of the number, 43 were girls and 27 boys. She said among them, 56 were Deaf persons and two Blind. Ms Kalokola urged residents in Kagera region to avoid stigma against People Living with Disabilities (PLWD) because they can perform wonders if given the required education
