The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recently revised their Pap Smear guidelines to reflect an increasing awareness of the fact that most cervical cancers are slow growing and that pre-cancers can sometimes go away on their own. Therefore, it is now recommended that young women get a Pap smear no more often than once every three years.
Women over the age of 30 can get tested even less often, if that test is combined with an HPV test. However, HPV testing is not recommended for women 29 and younger. HPV is far too common in that age group, and most infections in young women will never cause noticeable damage. Particularly in combination with the widespread use of the HPV vaccine in younger women, the health advantages of such testing are minimal, but the stress caused by a positive result can be enormous.
