Kenya: Get More ARVs to Patients, Charity Urges State

An international charity wants the government to ensure more Kenyans can get HIV/Aids drugs. Doctors Without Borders, commonly known as Medecins Sans Frontieres, yesterday urged the government to take measures that will enhance early uptake of Anti Retroviral drugs to fight HIV/Aids pandemic. MSF said early treatment for HIV/Aids patients helps to support their recovery and saves lives.

Speaking in Nairobi on Tuesday, MSF doctor Jennifer Cohn attributed reduced deaths, improved lifestyles and cost reduction of treatment to early introduction of ARVs to patients. Cohn called for concerted efforts to adequately fund the programmes to reduce the spread of HIV/Aids. According to a research carried out in five African countries including Kenya on 1,723 couples, early ARV uptake contributed up to 96 per cent effective management of the disease.

These revelations come against a backdrop of threats by the key sponsors of the fight against Aids - Global Fund and Presidential Emergency Plan For Aids Response (PEPFAR) - to withdraw their funding. Over 90 per cent of funding for HIV/Aids initiatives in Kenya comes from international donors. The withdrawal of the funds may adversely affect more than 500,000 Kenyans currently on ARVs. Jennifer appealed to the government to honour its promise of expanding the ARV uptake programme.
