Olympian Michael Johnson: Go Farther, Run Faster and Live Longer

Nothing gets the global population more excited than the Olympic Games. The Olympics give us the chance to celebrate our shared humanity, and the Olympic spirit can be seen in all those who compete in the Games, not just in those who win the medals. This spirit can be seen around the world.

In the spirit of the Olympics, the most important thing is camaraderie as it influences everyone's success. I've found that the support from my friends and family—my team—helps me stay motivated, challenged and inspired. The Olympics is a perfect starting point for building up your team of support and making small steps to a healthier lifestyle, together.

My days participating in the Olympics as a competitor may be over, but I still have the spirit in me to help support the visions and goals of any athlete who strives for his/her very best and to achieve their own personal milestones.

As we approach the 2012 London Olympics it is the ideal time to look at ways to improve and balance your lifestyle no matter what your age level and ability, everyone can improve something.

Michael Johnson's Tips to an Active and Healthy Lifestyle

.       Drink more water - I don't like water so I mix it up and drink sparkling water as well as flat water and set myself a daily quota.
.       Do some exercise at least 4 days per week - I have a busy schedule so I plan what days I will exercise each week based on my schedule
.       Eat a balanced diet and monitor your food intake weekly - I limit how often I eat non-healthy foods, but after eating not so healthy foods, I will balance that with healthy ones. Eating healthy all the time is difficult and usually leads to giving up. Balance and constant awareness of what you're putting in your body is key.
.       Find an active recreational activity to get the benefit of exercise while enjoying yourself - Mine is mountain biking.
.       Use technology to help track your exercise and activity - There are many products now that help you track your calories burned, steps taken throughout the day, etc. These tools help you with your goals and let you know when you're slacking off.

Living a healthy active lifestyle is about more than what you see us do on the track; it's about commitment and a strong sense of community support to help us achieve our goals. If you're a Facebook user, a new app called HealthyShare is a terrific way to connect with friends and family and achieve health and well-being goals. I care about people and want them to live a healthy and active lifestyle so I've included my workout routine in this app so we can achieve better health together.

Michael's HealthyShare Challenge

.       2 minutes of hamstring stretching
.       4 x 20 yards of bounding
.       3 sets of ten burpees

This week, the app will launch a series of Olympics-themed daily fitness challenges, so check it out on Facebook and be sure to follow along for all the 17 days of the 2012 Olympic Games.
