In honor of National HIV Testing Day, last week the CDC rolled out a pilot program to provide free HIV testing in local pharmacies. The two year program will provide tests in 24 stores, all of which are located in areas with a high prevalence of HIV. The goal is to find a fast, easy way to reach the many people who have no idea that they are living with the virus. If the program is successful, it will eventually be expanded across the country.
The CDC has recommended universal HIV testing for years; however, relatively few people actually get tested as often as the government recommends... or at all. Their doctors don't tell them they should be tested, and they don't ask. As such, it will be interesting to see how much of an impact this program has. If nothing else, free, accessible testing should help people whose only barrier to learning their HIV status is cost.
What do you think? Would being able to take a free test at your local drug store make you more likely to get tested regularly for HIV? Share your feelings about it here.
