Earlier this week, several provisions of the affordable care act came on line that will be enormously beneficial to women's health. These provisions allow women with employer-provided health care to receive a number of new preventative care screenings with no co-pay, including:
- Gestational diabetes screening
- HPV DNA testing
- STD counseling and HIV screening and counseling
- Contraception and contraceptive counseling
- Breastfeeding support, supplies, and counseling
- Domestic violence screening
One major disappointment with that list is that it contains STD counseling but not actual screening. Still, I can only hope that counseling will encourage more people to realize that they are at risk - and thus to ask for, and pay for, tests. Far too many people are unaware of their STD status, which puts them at risk for long term consequences, such as infertility. It also increases their risk of acquiring HIV.
