Trading sex for money, drugs, or alcohol is an established risk factor for STDs. This is primarily because people who are trading sex are often not empowered to negotiate safe sex or ask about testing. They also tend to have high risk, and often multiple, partners, As such, it was extremely disturbing to read this story about a study that found that just over 2 percent of teenagers in rural British Columbia high schools had traded sex for drugs or alcohol.
This is not the sort of things that most parents or teachers think to educate teenagers about. It is often the teenagers who are at highest risk for other reasons who engage in such behaviors; however, that doesn't mean it shouldn't be a wider spread topic of discussion. It can sometimes be difficult to figure out what teens will decide might be a good idea just because someone hasn't warned them against it. Don't believe me? There are areas of the world where young men think that it safer to have sex with other men than with women when they're worried about AIDS, because they've been warned about the HIV risk of vaginal intercourse but not the risk of other activities such as anal sex.
