Good News for Black Teens

African Americans have been disproportionately affected by the HIV epidemic; however, the latest data from the CDC's Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) provides hope for a change. Sexual risk behaviors among African American teens have declined significantly over the past twenty years. Between 1991 and 2011, the percentage of teens who had had sexual intercourse decreased from 82 to 60 percent. The percent who had had sex with four or more partners decreased from 43 to 25 percent. Finally, the percent of sexually active teens who had used a condom at last intercourse increased from 48 to 65 percent, although most of that increase occurred before 1999. Condom use largely remained stable, or even slightly decreased, between 2000 and 2011.

In all likelihood, many of these increases can be attributed to the amazing work of African American religious and secular leaders in educating Black teens about AIDS, unintended pregnancy, and other sexual risks. Youth campaigns from popular entertainment sites, such as MTV and Black Entertainment Television have also increased the visibility of these issues, particularly for high-risk urban teens. Hopefully this empowered generation's engagement with sexual health issues will continue as they age into adulthood. Maybe they'll even infect the older generation with more enthusiasm about safer sex and testing. Stranger things have happened.
