Oh, Cupid!

Cupid Female Condom

One of the most exciting things I have seen at the AIDS 2012 conference is a new type of female condom - the Cupid (pictured at right).

The Cupid, which was recently prequalified by the World Health Organization, looks like a great new alternative to traditional female condoms. Furthermore, it may be of particular interest to those individuals who are put off by the ring that holds the FC2 in place.

Unlike the currently available female condoms, the Cupid condom doesn't have an internal and external ring. Instead, the internal ring is replaced by a soft, flexible sponge. On first appearance, it looks like it might be an extremely comfortable option, and the sponge also has the advantage of being able to absorb the ejaculate, making clean up easier.

Although many of the innovations discussed at AIDS 2012 are of greatest interest to researchers, scientists and people living with HIV, this new condom has the potential to reach a much broader audience. It should please many of the men who currently love the female condom, while making the device less intimidating to those uncomfortable with the internal ring

Note: The Cupid is only the second female condom to get through the prequalification process. Prequalification means that the condom has passed technical review and its manufacturing process has been approved. It is a requirement for bulk purchases by international family planning programs.
