Two interesting articles about anal sex came across my radar this week - one from Alternet and one from the Sydney Morning Herald. Both reference a recent study looking at the large number of women who report pain during anal sex, and they do a good job of putting it into context. Specifically, both articles discuss the taboos surrounding anal sex, and the fact that these are highly problematic given the large percentage of adults who are likely having it, at least occasionally.
The problem with taboos is that it makes it difficult to study the health issues surrounding anal sex - for both heterosexual and homosexual men and women. While scientists are aware of anal STDs and even sexually transmitted anal cancers, there are a lot of very basic questions about the safety of anal sex that still need to be answered. For example, the Guide to Sexuality has written an excellent article about the fact that we don't even know which lubes are safest for use during anal sex - even as we know lubricant is almost certainly necessary.
Reducing the stigma surrounding anal sex would encourage more discussion of both its pleasures and its risks. Hopefully, it would also encourage further research. What we don't know can hurt us, and there's a lot we don't know about anal sex.
