Cases of mother to child HIV transmission has re- duced, Specials Programmes minister Esther Murugi has said. Speaking at the Kenya Women Parliamentary Association forum in Nairobi yesterday, Murugi said new infections among children has been brought down from an estimated 100 HIV infecions per day to 36 .
She however said the country cannot afford to be complacent. "We are committed to eliminating new HIV infec- tions among children and keeping their mothers alive.
These ambitious targets will require political commitment and leadership," Murugi said. She asked national leaders to lobby for an increase in domestic investments and funding to strengthen health facilities, mobilise citizens and create demand for services.
Murugi asked women MPs to use their political campaigns to break the silence on HIV-related stigma and discrimination that prevents pregnant women to get HIV and antenatal services.
