FIRST Republican President, Kenneth Kaunda has appealed to the corporate world to help his foundation raise about K600 million for next Thursday's inaugural Kenneth Kaunda Children of Africa Foundation (KKCAF) golf tournament to be held at Lusaka Golf Club.
And Barrick Gold Corporation, the world's largest gold miner and owners of Lumwana Mine in Solwezi, have weighed in heavily with a platinum sponsorship of K50 million towards the KKCAF golf tournament, with Stanbic Bank Zambia Limited making a K10 million contribution in the bronze category.
Speaking at a Press briefing at Lusaka Golf Club yesterday, Kaunda, who is patron of the KKCAF, appealed to the business community to help raise financial resources for children whose parents had died as a result of HIV/AIDS, and other orphans and vulnerable children in Zambia and Africa as a whole, by sponsoring a team in the 36-hole event or by directing their contributions to his office.
Kaunda, who is an honorary life member at Lusaka Golf Club, has dedicated the one-day first ever KKCAF golf tournament to his late wife, Mama Betty, saying she believed in assisting orphaned children and the poorest of the poor in society.
"Mr president (Lusaka Golf Club president), my special appeal to the corporate world is, let's do everything possible to support this cause by sponsoring participating teams and making this cause possible.
"This and other contributions will help us mitigate the impact of HIV/AIDS especially among children and the vulnerable in society," Kaunda said.
He expressed gratitude to Lusaka Golf Club for accepting to host the golf tournament which would be played by a team of four players.
"I am glad to be here (Lusaka Golf Club) at this wonderful place which has hosted a number of high status golf events of etiquette.
"The Kenneth David Kaunda golf tournament organisers through my office did confirm the tournament will be held here to raise funds for children whose parents have died of HIV/AIDS and other orphans and the vulnerable in society."
He said golf was one noble sport he had played for a long time and that it was at par with his commitment to reducing the negative effects of HIV/AIDS on children in Africa.
"Your support will enable us to continue implementing our primary objective of helping to mitigate the impact of HIV and AIDS on orphans and other vulnerable children. The money from this tournament will go towards supporting major projects under the KKCAF which is not just in Zambia but across Africa," he said.
Lusaka Golf Club head of corporate liaison committee, Nsama Mataka said the club was honoured to be able to host the inaugural KKCAF annual golf tournament which had not just been dedicated to the Children of Africa Foundation but also to honour the memory of Mama Betty.
"It's a great honour that we are hosting a tournament in honour of the First Republican President. In the US, there is the President's Cup, a really distinguished tournament and I ask the corporate world in the country to make this annual tournament a success," he said.
Barrick Gold Lumwana Mine corporate affairs manager, Nathan Chishimba said the company was committed to assisting noble programmes like the fight against HIV/AIDS, and that Barrick Gold was impressed with the projects carried out by the first President through his KKCAF.
