STD Testing for Pregnant Women

If there's one thing that you know about (most) pregnant women, it's that they've probably been having sex. Therefore, it's somewhat surprising how few of them are being tested for common STDs such as chlamydia and gonorrhea, at least according to a recent report from the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The study, published online last month, found that only around 60 percent of pregnant women were properly tested for these STDs - a problem since they can potentially have negative outcomes for the pregnancy and and infant. Even more worrisome, although women are supposed to be re-screened within three weeks to make certain that treatment worked, proper retesting was uncommon.

I have to wonder how much of this is due to the same assumption I've discussed before - that privately insured married women don't need to be tested for STDs, because they're just not the sort of people who are at risk. That assumption may be even more prevalent about pregnant women - who are clearly always in monogamous relationships where both partners were thoroughly tested before the pregnancy occurred..... and if you can't see my eyes rolling while you're reading that sentence, I'm doing something wrong.
