Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of the United States approved a home HIV saliva testing kit weeks ago. According to the Uganda AIDS information centre, the kits have not yet arrived in the country.
Statistics from Uganda AIDS Commission and the Ministry of Health state that, more than 2 million Ugandans are living with HIV, yet over 70% of these do not know they carry the virus.
OraQuick Advance kit allows users to quickly test and know their HIV status in the comfort of their homes, without the need of a health worker or laboratory.
One swabs along the gums or cheeks then places it into a liquid in the testing device. After 15-20 minutes, an indicator lights up if the test detects the presence of HIV-1 or HIV-2 antibodies.
The HIV home test kits are USAID and FDA approved with a 99,8 % sensitivity and accuracy rate.
