The FDA has decided to postpone a final decision on whether Truvada should be approved as a drug for pre-exposure prophylaxis(PrEP). The decision was initially expected to be made by June 15, but the agency has pushed it off until September to allow more time to review the manufacturer's plans to reduce potential problems that might be associated with drug use. These risks include the possibility of PreP use causing drug resistance in individuals who do not yet know they are infected with HIV. Interim guidelines state that people should be tested for the virus before PreP is prescribed.
Personally, I think the delay is probably a good thing. I've made no secret that I share many of the major concerns about PreP, but I also think it could be a useful tool in the fight against AIDS. Taking a few months to try and make the method safer may be hard for people who want approval now, but hopefully it will improve everyone's health in the long run.
